Summary of the
On Aired Program
Good news for those staying under the Dependant Status. Due to the amendment of the law in April 2000, you are now allowed to have a part time job. This amendment was made to especially help the living of the foreign students. In many cases, foreign students come to along with their whole family. (By the way, the status of resident for the family members is the Dependant Status.) Unfortunately, life in Japan is not that easy, and it is very hard for the whole for the whole family to make a living with only the foreign students earning and scholarship. After all, the student’s primary aim of stay is to study. Not to earn money. So thanks to the amendment, the Dependant Status members of the family can have a part time job to help the family make a living.

According to the amendment :

1) After obtaining the Permission to Engage in an Activity Other Than That Permitted by the Status of Residence Previously Granted, the Dependant Status resident may have a part time job.

2) The total working hours must be within in 28 hours per week (no daily working hour restrictions)

3) When changing jobs, you must re-obtain the permission.(*1)

4) There is no obligation of the type of work to be engaged in

(*1) Whereas for those under the Student status do not have to re-obtain the permission, each time they change their job

Keep in mind, this goes for all Dependant Status residence. Whether they are the family of a foreign student, or those staying under the working visas.

The necessary documents to apply for permission to engage in an Activity Other Than That Permitted by the Status of Residence Previously Granted are:

1.The contract signed between you and your employer

(the working conditions, such as the working hours and what kind of work you will be engaged in must be stated.)
2.Alien Registration Card
3.Passport
4.Application (you can get it at the immigration office)
