 Status of residence for Housekeepers
On Aired Data: December 21, 1999
Summary of the On Aired Program

Client:
A foreign male staying in Japan under the Engineer status, and he is currently working as an Engineer at a computer company. He is staying with his wife and children.

Case:
He would like to invite the housekeeper that worked for them while they were in their mother country. But he has heard that it is very difficult to invite a foreign housekeeper.

As our client has mentioned it is true that it is difficult to hire a foreign housekeeper. This is due to the conditions that one must clear to be permitted to work as a housekeeper in Japan. Not only are there conditions for the housekeeper he/herself, but also for the employer.

The status for housekeepers would be the Designated Activities status. Working Holiday visa holders, amateur athletes are also included in this status. Those who are allowed to employee housekeepers are:

*Diplomats

*Consular officials

*Officials of International Organizations

*Majors and those above who belong to the US Military

*Investor/Business Manager status holders

*Legal/Accounting Service status holders

And special conditions for the employer would be:

*(for Investor/Business Manager/Legal Accounting Service holders)

the family member must include a child under 13, and the wife must be ill and unable

to take care of the house

The conditions for the housekeeper would be:

*He/she must speak the same mother tongue as the employer

*Must be the age of 18 and above

*(for Legal/Accounting Service holders)

the monthly salary of the housekeeper must be 150,000yen or more

As you can see, since our client is staying under the Engineer status, unfortunately he is not eligible to hire a housekeeper.
