Status of Residence Definition Required Documents
Designated Activities Activities that are specifically designated by the Minister of Justice for foreign individuals. (For example, activities on the part of foreigners who wish to enter Japan as personal help privately employed by diplomats, consular representatives, etc.; foreigners who wish to enter Japan under bilateral working holiday agreements; foreigners who are employed by companies, etc. and are active as athletes in amateur sports and their dependent spouses and children; foreign lawyers engaged in international arbitration affairs, etc. university students engaged in internship activities.) 1) In cases where the person concerned intends to engage in management of the gainful business or to engage in the activity to be paid; the following materials are required.
Documents certifying the activity, its duration, position and the remuneration of the person concerned
2) In other cases; the following materials are required
a. Documents certifying the activity during the stay of the person concerned in Japan
b. Documents certifying that the person concerned can defray all the expenses incurred during the stay in Japan
Spouse or Child of Japanese National Spouses of Japanese nationals, children adopted by Japanese nationals in accordance with the provisions of Article 817-2 of the Civil Code (Law No. 89 of 1896), or those born as children of Japanese nationals. 1) In cases where the person concerned is a spouse of Japanese national; the following materials are required.
a. Documents certifying that the person concerned is a spouse of the Japanese national and his her resident card
b. Documents certifying the profession and the income of the person concerned or his or her spouse
c. A letter of guarantee by the person living in Japan
2) In cases where the person concerned is a child or an adopted child of a Japanese national; the following materials are required
a. A copy of the family registration of the Japanese national concerned, the birth certificate of the foreign national concerned and other documents certifying the personal relationship between the parent and the child
b. Documents certifying the profession and the income of the foreign national concerned or his or her father or mother
c. A letter of guarantee by the Japanese national concerned or another person living in Japan
Spouse or Child of Permanent Resident Spouses of those who stay with Permanent Resident status or those who are Special Permanent Residents as described in the Special Law on Immigration Control, which covers those who have lost Japanese nationality through a peace treaty between Japan and another nation, or those born as children of Permanent or Special Permanent Residents. 1) In cases where the person concerned is a spouse of the permanent resident; the following materials are required.
a. Documents certifying the personal relationship between the person concerned and the permanent resident concerned
b. Copies of the alien registration card or the passport of the permanent resident concerned
c.Documents certifying the profession and the income of the foreign national concerned or his or her spouse
d. A letter of guarantee by the permanent resident concerned
2) In cases where the person concerned is a child of the permanent resident; the following materials are required.
a. The birth certificate of the person concerned and other documents certifying the personal relationship between the parent and the child
b. Copies of the alien registration card or the passport of the permanent resident concerned
c. Documents certifying the profession and the income of the foreign national concerned or his or her father or mother
d. A letter of guarantee by the permanent resident concerned or another person living in Japan
Long Term Resident Refugees as stipulated by the convention relating to the Status of Refugees, Indochinese refugee settlers, second- and third-generation Japanese settlers, etc. 1) A copy of the family registration, the marriage certificate, the birth certificate and other documents certifying the status of the foreign national concerned
2) Documents certifying that the person concerned can defray all the expenses incurred during the stay in Japan. In cases where the expenses incurred during the stay in Japan is defrayed by another person, documents certifying the income of the person who intends to defray all the expenses
3) A letter of guarantee by the person living in Japan
