Visa Status for a Tango Dancer
On Aired Data: Oct. 17, 2000
Summary of the
Aired Program
Client:
A male dancer from Argentina(about 20 years old), who specializes in Tango

Case:
He would like to know what kind of visa status he would have to apply for.

Many people have the impression that dancers stay in Japan under the "Entertainer" status. But the Entertainer status for those who are engaged in theatrical performances, musical performances, sports or any other show business. And this status has strict requirements, especially for dancers.
*Must have a manager who is has 3 or more years of experience in the field
*Must employ more than 5 full time employees
*Certain amount of space for the stage, and back stage
*others
So, except for some professional athletes or big musicians, in most cases you would need an agent to handle all visa related matters.

If our client wishes to come to Japan under the Entertainer status, he should have an agent in Japan who will invite him over. Or he also has a choice of staying under the Artist status.

The Artist status is for those who are planning to be engaged in artistic activities, such as painters, sculptors, photographers, and such. Also those who will be teaching art, such as music, fine art, writing, performing, dancing, filming, and so on also fall in to this status. The two main qualities you must clear are that you have marked high quality in exhibitions, or contests with you work, and prove that you can make a living in Japan with your artistic ability.

Documents Required: References to show how highly you have been evaluated in
contests or exhibitions. (trophies, certificates, articles, etc.)
If you are going to sign a contract with anyone, you also need the
"Letter of acceptance" from the other party.
If you are not signing any contracts, you also need papers to show
what activities you will be concerned in, the term of your
activities, and the income you will have from the activities.

In the case of our client, we have received information that he has received a few job offers from dance schools, so he will need to show the contract. Also, he needs to hand in references of how well he has done in dancing in Argentina. One good way is for him to ask his teacher to write a Letter of Recommendation. If our client has experience in teaching, it would be wiser to attach any documents to prove it.
