Summary of
the On Aired
Program
Client A : Korean female, age 25. Lives in Japan with her family (father, mother, and 22 year old sister) Her parents run a factory. The client works at a bank, and her younger sister will be graduating college soon and plans to work as a part timer.

Case A: The client has been brought up in Japan, just like the rest of her Japanese friends. At this stage of her life, she thinks she will live in Japan for the rest of her life, so she is thinking of naturalization. She has talked it over with her family, and while the parents tend to keep their Korean citizenship, they are happy to support both their daughters naturalization. The client has heard rumors that naturalization is hard to be approved for only part of the family members. She is wondering if this rumor is true, and is it really difficult for only her sister and herself to be approved of naturalization.

Although the immigration law does not specify on whether the whole family has to register together for naturalization or not, it is true that the Ministry of Justice tends to advise foreign residents, especially married couples to register for naturalization as a family. But this also does not mean that married couples cannot be approved of separately. To be specific, the result is depends on each case, meaning in some cases, married couples can be approved separately. So the Ministry of Justice advises that although they cannot assure you whether you will be definitely approved or not, hand in your application, because all cases have a chance of approval.

In this case, the client and her sister are both adults, and single, which makes it an easier case to receive approval. Although, it maybe wiser for the client’s sister to prove that she can make a leaving with the earnings from her part time job. She shouldn’t worry though, as long as she honestly registers her earnings, and also informs that she is still dependant on her father.

Client B: Chinese male who has been living in Japan for nearly 7 years. He has a wife who has been living in Japan for 3 years.

Case B: This couple would like to apply for naturalization. Although the husband meets the factors, his wife has to wait another 2 years to apply. The couple is wondering if there is any other way for them, besides waiting another to 2 years to apply.

To apply for naturalization, you must be living in Japan for more than 5 years, whereas if you are married to a Japanese citizen it is 3 years. Since this client is a Chinese national, basically both of them have to be living in Japan for 5 years.

But there is another way for this couple. The client himself can apply for the naturalization, and after the approval, his wife can apply for naturalization as a wife of a Japanese citizen. But keep in mind that at the point of application, the wife has to have had lived in Japan for more than 3 years. Even if she does have to wait, it would be at least shorter than waiting for 5 years to pass for her life in Japan.
